If you've ever worked in 3D camera tracking or matchmoving, you know the pain: what's the exact sensor size of the camera that shot this footage? Getting the filmback wrong means your entire camera solve is off — and with it, every CG element you place in the scene.
That's why we built the Garlicky Filmback Calculator — a free web app that gives you all the filmback information your VFX heart desires, at the push of a button.
What Is Filmback and Why Does It Matter?
"Filmback" refers to the physical dimensions of a camera sensor's active imaging area. Together with the focal length of the lens, it determines the field of view (FOV) of the recorded image. In VFX, this relationship is critical: if your 3D software doesn't know the correct filmback and focal length, the virtual camera won't match the real one — and your composited elements will look off.
This is especially important for 3D camera tracking (matchmoving), where the software reconstructs the real camera's movement in 3D space. Feed it wrong sensor data, and your tracked geometry will be stretched, squashed, or simply won't line up with the plate.
How the Garlicky Filmback Calculator Helps
Our calculator is a lightweight web app — no installation required. Simply visit filmback.garlicvfx.com, select your camera, and instantly get the sensor dimensions you need for your tracking software, whether that's 3DEqualizer, SynthEyes, PFTrack, Nuke, or any other tool in your pipeline.
Key features include:
Comprehensive camera database — covering cinema cameras from ARRI, RED, Sony, Blackmagic, Canon, and more
Instant filmback calculations — sensor width, height, and diagonal at your fingertips
FOV and focal length tools — calculate field of view from known parameters or work backwards
Mobile-friendly — use it on set from your phone, no app download needed
100% free — built by VFX artists, for VFX artists
Built from Real-World Production Experience
The Garlicky Filmback Calculator was born out of the same frustration every VFX artist knows: scrambling to find accurate sensor data in the middle of a project. Having worked on productions like Star Wars: Andor, Meg 2: The Trench, and The Crow, as well as countless commercials for brands like Audi, Porsche, and Nivea — I've been in that situation more times than I can count.
Whether you're on set needing a quick reference, or back in the studio setting up your camera solve, the calculator is designed to get you the data you need in seconds — not minutes of Googling.
